Free Essays on Vitamin C

The ancient Egyptians were known for performing the first type of brain surgery by drilling a small hole in the back of a patient’s head to release the fluid pressure on the brain. Today doctors have gone beyond the simplicity of brain surgery and mapped out the human genetic code. After thousands of years and so many medical achievements the human race still cannot prevent falling victim to the common cold with any type of over the counter or prescription medication. A â€Å"cold† is a viral or bacterial infection in the body that the immune system cannot fight off immediately with antibodies (Wan). When the infection invades the body the immune system is triggered and it tries to determine if the infection is new or a returning visitor. If the infection is a returning visitor the immune system releases killer T cells to destroy the infection within 48 hours of the invasion and the host never knew there was an infection in the body. If the infection is new it triggers a chain of events that is known by every living human on the face of the earth. â€Å"The common cold causes a tremendous amount of human suffering. 5 Common Misconceptions About Black Lives Matter

5 Common Misconceptions About Black Lives Matter Unpack the misconceptions that have been spread about the movement by separating fact from fiction about Black Lives Matter. All Lives Matter The top concern critics of Black Lives Matter say they have about the group (actually a collective of organizations with no governing body) is its name. Take Rudy Giuliani. â€Å"They sing rap songs about killing police officers and they talk about killing police officers and yell it out at their rallies,† he told CBS News on July 10. â€Å"And when you say black lives matter, that’s inherently racist. Black lives matter, white lives matter, Asian lives matter, Hispanic lives matter – that’s anti-American and it’s racist.† Racism is the belief that one group is inherently superior to another and the institutions that function as such. Black Lives Matter is not saying that all lives don’t matter or that other people’s lives aren’t as valuable as African Americans’ lives. It is arguing that because of systemic racism (dating back to the implementation of the Black Codes during Reconstruction) blacks disproportionately have deadly encounters with cops, and the public needs to care about the lives lost. During an appearance on â€Å"The Daily Show,† Black Lives Matter activist DeRay McKesson called the focus on â€Å"all lives matter† a distraction technique. He likened it to someone criticizing a breast cancer rally for not focusing on colon cancer as well. â€Å"We’re not saying colon cancer doesn’t matter,† he said. â€Å"We’re not saying other lives don’t matter. What we are saying is there is something unique about the trauma that black people have experienced in this country, especially around policing, and we need to call that out.† Giuliani’s accusation that Black Lives Matter activists sing about killing the police is unfounded. He’s conflated rap groups from decades ago, such as Ice-T’s band Body Count of â€Å"Cop Killer† fame, with the black activists of today. Giuliani told CBS that, of course, black lives matter to him, but his remarks suggest he can’t be bothered to tell one group of blacks from another. Whether rappers, gang members or civil rights activists are the topic at hand, they’re all interchangeable because they’re black. This ideology is rooted in racism. While whites get to be individuals, blacks and other people of color are one and the same in a white supremacist framework. The accusation that Black Lives Matter is racist also overlooks the fact that people from a broad coalition of racial groups, including Asian Americans, Latinos and whites, are among its supporters. In addition, the group decries police violence, whether the officers involved are white or people of color. When Baltimore man Freddie Gray died in police custody in 2015, Black Lives Matter demanded justice, even though most of the officers involved were African Americans.   People of Color Aren’t Racially Profiled Detractors of the Black Lives Matter movement argue that police do not single out African Americans, ignoring mountains of research that indicate racial profiling is a significant concern in communities of color. These critics assert that police have a greater presence in black neighborhoods because black people commit more crimes. On the contrary, police disproportionately target blacks, which doesn’t mean African Americans break the law any more often than whites do. The New York Police Department’s stop-and-frisk program is a case in point. Several civil rights groups filed a lawsuit against the NYPD in 2012, alleging that the program was racially discriminatory. Eighty-seven percent of the individuals NYPD targeted for stops and frisks were young black and Latino men, a greater proportion than they made up of the population. Police even targeted blacks and Latinos for most of the stops in areas where people of color made up 14 percent or less of the population, indicating the authorities weren’t drawn to a particular neighborhood but to residents of a particular skin tone. Ninety percent of people NYPD stopped anywhere did nothing wrong. Although police were more likely to find weapons on whites than they were on people of color, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union, that didn’t result in the authorities stepping up their random searches of whites. Racial disparities in policing can be found on the West Coast as well. In California, blacks comprise 6 percent of the population but 17 percent of people arrested and about a quarter of those who die in police custody, according to the OpenJustice data portal launched by Attorney General Kamala Harris in 2015. Collectively, the disproportionate amount of blacks stopped, arrested and who die in police custody explains why the Black Lives Matter movement exists and why the focus isn’t on all lives. Activists Don’t Care About Black-on-Black Crime Conservatives love to argue that African Americans only care when police kill blacks and not when blacks kill each other. For one, the idea of black-on-black crime is a fallacy. Just as blacks are more likely to be killed by fellow blacks, whites are more likely to be killed by other whites. That’s because people tend to be killed by those close to them or who live in their communities.    That said, African Americans, particularly pastors, reformed gang members and community activists, have long worked to end gang violence in their communities. In Chicago, the Rev. Ira Acree of Greater St. John Bible Church has fought against gang violence and police killings alike. In 2012, former Blood member Shanduke McPhatter formed the New York nonprofit Gangsta Making Astronomical Community Changes. Even gangster rappers have taken part in the effort to stop gang violence, with members of N.W.A., Ice-T and several others teaming up in 1990 as the West Coast Rap All-Stars for the single â€Å"We’re All in the Same Gang.† The idea that blacks don’t care about gang violence in their communities is meritless, given that anti-gang efforts date back decades and the African Americans trying to stop such violence are too numerous to name. Pastor Bryan Loritts of Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in California aptly explained to a Twitter user why gang violence and police brutality are received differently. â€Å"I expect criminals to act like criminals,† he said. â€Å"I dont expect those who are to protect us to kill us. Not the same.† Black  Lives Matter Inspired Dallas Police Shootings The most defamatory and irresponsible critique of Black Lives Matter is that it provoked Dallas shooter Micah Johnson to kill five police officers. â€Å"I do blame people on social media...for their hatred towards police,† Texas Lt. Gov. Patrick said. â€Å"I do blame former Black Lives Matter protests.† He added that law-abiding citizens with big mouths led to the killings. The month before, Patrick summed up the mass murder of 49 people at a gay club in Orlando, Fla., as â€Å"reaping what you sow,† revealing himself to be a bigot, so it’s not entirely surprising that he would choose to use the Dallas tragedy to accuse Black Lives Matter as being accomplices of sorts to murder. But Patrick knew nothing about the killer, his mental health or anything else in his history that led him to commit such a heinous crime, and the politician willfully overlooked the fact that the killer acted alone and was not part of Black Lives Matter. Generations of African Americans have been angry about police killings and racism generally in the criminal justice system. Years before Black Lives Matter existed, police had a strained relationship with communities of color. The movement didn’t create this anger nor should it be blamed for the actions of one deeply troubled young man. Black activists have raised the call for an end to violence, not an escalation of it, Black Lives Matter said in a July 8 statement about the Dallas killings. â€Å"Yesterday’s attack was the result of the actions of a lone gunman. To assign the actions of one person to an entire movement is dangerous and irresponsible.† Police Shootings Are the Only Problem While police shootings are the focus of Black Lives Matter, deadly force isn’t the only issue adversely affecting African Americans. Racial discrimination infiltrates every facet of American life, including education, employment, housing and medicine in addition to the criminal justice system. While police killings are a grave concern, most blacks won’t die at the hands of a cop, but they may face barriers in a variety of sectors. Whether the topic at hand is the disproportionate amount of black youth suspended from school or black patients of all income levels receiving poorer medical care than their white counterparts, black lives matter in these instances as well. The focus on police killings may lead everyday Americans to think they’re not part of the nation’s race problem. The opposite is true. Police officers don’t exist in a vacuum. The implicit or explicit bias that reveals itself when they deal with black people stems from cultural norms that signal it’s okay to treat blacks as if they’re inferior. Black Lives Matter argues that African Americans are equal to everyone else in this country and institutions that don’t operate as such should be held accountable.

How can each of the five SLEPT macro-environment factors directly Essay

How can each of the five SLEPT macro-environment factors directly drive the content and services provided by a website - Essay Example It is through use of electronic means of communication that a lot of information reaches the target group not only in a local region but all over the world. SLEPT which stands for Social, legal, Economic, Political and Technological factors can directly propel the services and content provided by website (Tajes & Ortiz 2005). These factors are the micro-environment factors that influence any type of business. The business organization must conform to the changing trends of these factors to survive the harsh and competitive market. For instance when website owners develop keen interest in these micro-environmental factors they will definitely win the attention and trust of the many online customers they come across the internet. Each SLAPT factor drives the website services and content differently. Social factors such carry a lot of weight when it comes to the customer trend of purchasing products and utilizing services. In most cases social factors refer to alterations in society that can either promote or hinder a certain business. These changes include population, age and customer lifestyles. These demographic factors affect the buying design. Aware of these vital considerations, the website owners can take advantage of the type of customers using the internet services by advertising services and goods that draw the attention of these special users of internet (Tajes & Ortiz 2005). Legal factors form the second category of micro-environmental elements that boost website content and services. RFID in the Context of Customer Services Research Paper

RFID in the Context of Customer Services - Research Paper Example In the modern business world, there is a need for companies and firms to increase the quality of services they provide their customers or quality of goods and products they produce or manufacture. It is very hard for any company or a firm to regain popularity among their lost customers or improve their position in the market. To make a profit very often means to provide customers with better services. At the same time, a chosen marketing strategy of customers’ services improvement should be developed in compliance with the needs of the company; their assets, potential, set goals and many other internal and external factors. Moreover, with regards to a wide-spread nature of technological innovations, companies implement innovative technologies in customer services. In accordance with research conducted by†¦: â€Å"Technology does more than enable the creation of new or improved services. It may also improve consistent service standards of the company, and, what is more, i mportant is to involve the customers in operations through self-service technology† (Angeles 2005, p. 51). Therefore, the modern business world needs innovations. To keep pace with the globalized world every firm or company should meet new requirements and follow the developments of technologies. In order to appropriately introduce valuable innovative assets, it is relevant to assess their advantages and disadvantages. An individual-centered approach is high on the agenda in the modern business world. A customer is of crucial importance. The more customers the company has, the greater success comes. The relevance of RFID technology in the business world Taking into account the abovementioned issues of the modern business world, an innovative vision in the field of customer services can be illustrated by a high popularity of Radio Frequency Identification services. It is necessary to answer the question: â€Å"whether RFID technology is the best customers’ services impl emented by the company to increase its sales?†In order to answer this question, it is relevant to consider modern researchers and studies on RFID technology, its advantages, and disadvantages, its importance for the company and the customers.  Ã‚

Essay --

Cognitive behavioural therapy, an empirically validated treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (Robinson, Berman, & Neimeyer, 1990) has featured in over 78 research studies, and is the treatment of choice when treating depression by many clinicians. A meta analaysis completed by Dobson (1989), reviewed 28 studies featuring cognitive therapy and depression, and found that cognitive therapy was a more effective treatment modality than behaviour therapy, wait list control, medication, and other therapies. A further meta-analysis conducted by Gloaguen et al., (1998) found that Cognitive behavioural therapy was equal to behaviour therapy, and more effective than drug treatments when treating Major Depressive Disorder. While depression has been found to be successfully treated by therapies such as CBT, many depressed individuals do not continue to attend therapy (Barnes et al., 2003). This can be challenging as CBT in particular requires a commitment from participants in terms of attending a number of sessions so that the client can begin to experience progress. Researchers have found inattendance by those with depression may be due to a number of factors, such as avoidance of dealing with negative feelings (Barnes et al., 2013). According to MacDonald et al (2007), the symptomology of depression, such as reduced concentration, may provide a need for alternate ways of information to be provided when treating depression. One of the core components of CBT is homework activities, with homework completion being found to lead to greater results of therapy (Flynn, 2011). In a study by Simons et al., (2012), it was found that adolescents self reported less depressive symptoms, as well as reduced hopelessness,... ...as found, with these changes maintained at three and six month follow up. In addition, a one day EFT workshop, where EFT was delivered to 216 healthcare workers, resulted in a statistically significant reduction in depressive symptoms (Church, Geronilla, & Dinter, 2009). Two randomised controlled trials (RCT) found EFT to be an effective medium when treating symptoms of depression. After completing an 8 week online EFT course, 36 fibromyalgia patients receiving treatment for PTSD were found to have a significant reduction of depressive symptoms (Brattberg, 2008). The second RCT focussed on 59 war veterans who were experiencing clinical levels of depression. After six sessions of EFT, there was a significant change in their depressive levels which dropped to a subclinical level. These improvements were also maintained at follow-up (Church et al., 2011).

Diary of Wimpy Kid Evaluative Essay Essay

Abstract The Diary of a Wimpy kid is a book about adolescence who have dealt with emotional struggles and social acceptance in middle school. The book highlighted areas of struggle which included: bullies, emotional responses in both positive and negative ways, friendship, and family dynamics. The book was intended was readers of age seven and older but could be used a discussion book with children and dealing with social issues. The book genre is comedy and humor and is full of illustration to help the reader understand the concepts and lessons of the book. It is written in simple words and would be a good read for children and early adolescence. The book, The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, written by Jeff Kinney discussed many literary elements while its ultimate theme was humor. The book included topics about friendship, family, middle school, peer pressure, social acceptance and faux pas, and morality issues. The book had been written in the genre of comedy and was intended for readers between the ages of seven and older. The book approached adolescence from a relatable standpoint with kids who attempted to gain a sense of value and self worth through social acceptance. The book was written very well and taught several valuable moral lessons that could be used for children to gain understanding about peer issues and consequence of actions. The book had several strong characters that influenced the main character’s life. The first main character was Greg Heffley and the second was his best friend Rowley. The story began with a diary that Greg had received from his Mother. Although he had been embarrassed by the gift, he decided to write down the stories of his daily life so that he could share it with people once he became rich and famous. Greg was portrayed as an extremely insecure kid who was desperate to be recognized and gain popularity. His insecurity manifested into his closest friendship and relationships through arrogance,  criticism, lying, jealousy and pride. An example of this was when Greg befriended Rowley. He reached out to him under the pretense that Rowley would be so blessed to be friends with him and befriended him out of a place of pity. Greg treated Rowley as a lesser and often times would do things to put him down just like his older brother would do to him. Rowley was completely the opposite. He happened to be very naive and childlike in many ways. He was a kid that was very secure in who he was and was not concerned with fitting into anything. He was genuinely loving and humorous, and because of that it attracted friendships and sometimes the occasional uninvited ridicule. The boys lives intertwined and eventually their friendship was tested. Greg lied to Rowley which had been motivated by jealousy because Rowley had become popular while Greg continued to go unnoticed. The author included the real emotional high’s and low’s of adolescent friendship through the two main characters. The author wrote the book in a way that expressed the dynamics of friendship and social acceptance through comedy. Kinney made the characters very relatable and expressed the problems with adolescence trying to make sense of their emotions and solving their own problems (Kinney, 2010). In the story, Greg wanted to become popular and was doing everything he could to make that happen. With many failed attempts, constant bullying, and social ridicule he eventually joined the safety team with Rowley. Once they were on the team together they had been given the responsibility to to walk children home from school. The boys took ownership in there jobs but circumstances had interrupted Rowley’s service to the team. Rowley was not able to walk the kids home that afternoon but lent his jacket to Greg and insisted that he do it. Later a kindergartener had been chased down while on Greg’s shift, but because he had worn Rowley’s jacket, it had been reported back to the school that Rowley was the problem. Later, Rowley received punishment and was no longer allowed to be a safety patrol kid. Greg was blinded by jealousy and so desperate for acceptance he figured he would do the â€Å"right thing† by covering his mistake and allowing his friend to take the fall (Kinney, 2010). His need to be accepted resulted in him betraying Rowley to maintain his small portion of position in the social scene. Later he  confessed to Rowley that he had been the one to blame and did not apologize for what he had done but justified it. Greg felt entitled to his position and because they were friends he felt he could use Rowley and that would be accepted (Kinney, 2010). The safety story did an excellent job of portraying how emotions can rule a person in a negative manner. It also demonstrated the desire for social acceptance and how people are willing to sacrifice the most valuable relationships to to gain popularity. The particular story was written in a way that really gave an accurate portrayal on the depth of the heart of adolescence when they are not properly guided and taught by the parents to help them understand the emotional issues of the heart (Park, 2009). The author used the portion of the story to help the reader discern good friendships from bad friendships and what character attributes friends should look for in one another. Once Rowley was informed of the truth he discovered that Greg was not a good friend. He recognized that Greg was selfish, jealous, prideful, and a person that would betray him. The revelation resulted in Rowley walking away from their friendship. The unveiled truth about friendship left the reader to ponder the questions about their friendships and also the question of what kind of friend they are to other people. As the story continued the author showed the power of standing up for your friends and the power of forgiveness. The story picked up where Rowley and Greg were about to fight but were cornered by bullies that were going to force the boys to eat the slimed cheese from the basketball court. To touch the cheese would be social suicide to any student, but to eat it meant far worse. The bullies forced Rowley to eat the cheese but were chased off from a teacher before Greg had too (Wimpy greg, 2004). Once the students on the campus saw the cheese they began to crowd around Rowley to judge him and make fun of him. At that moment, Greg stepped up and took the fall for Rowley by telling the classmates that he had been the one that had touched the cheese. The kids fled from Greg but his relationship with Rowley was restored. Once Greg was free from trying to fit in was when he became a real friend  and a person of good character. The final portion of the story brought redemption to Greg’s character and demonstrated to the reader that it is never to late to do the right thing. As a result of making the right choice, Rowley forgave Greg, and Greg received the lesson that one good friend is more important that crowds of superficial people (Family, 2010). The portion of the story left the reader with the moral lesson that it is better to be yourself than trying to fit into a crowd and be someone you are not. The book would be very appropriate for middle school kids because it discussed relatable issues and conflicts that could arise from trying to fit in or become popular. It gave several moral lessons to help the reader understand the dynamics to friendship and insecurities with school and growing up. The author did a great job of keeping the reader engaged by the comical illustrations and dialogue that happened between characters. He also portrayed the reality of common struggles in middle school and how critical it was to be true to oneself. The author summarized the book by having the two main characters resolve their conflict and accept who they were. This book is a perfect example of societies condition. The story line may have been intended for middle school children, but society is the same way as adults. There is a need to be accepted, powerful, recognized, feeling entitled to things, people have used others as scapegoats, betrayal, jealousy, strife, revenge, and many other negative things. However, there was also the reality of forgiveness. Even today, when people forgive others, defend them, take accountability and ownership for mistakes, gain the wisdom that what they chase is not as important as money or fame, there is a place of resolution and resolve in peoples lives. While trying to chase after fame and sacrificing what is important there is a misery that follows, but the contentment comes after forgiveness and the understanding of what it important. I think this book is a good read for kids. There are character issues and sin issues that I did not like, but it is a book that kids could read and grasp the moral roots of it. I think it would be beneficial for a parent to discuss the moral failures of the main character and give insight into what  they should do to handle situations with similar circumstances. With older children, this would be a great book to read as a family and have a book study that would help kids recognize their own areas of weaknesses and temptations. I think the author did an excellent job adapting himself into the adolescent world while bringing humor and practical ways to make right decisions. Bibliography: Kinney, J. (2010). The Great Gatsby

Overview: Your team will create  one PowerPoint presentation according to the instructions below. Each member of your team will contribute information and help the leader compile the information into  one final presentation. Team assignment: * Your team will select one of the following characters from  The Great Gatsby: * Nick Carraway * Jay Gatsby * Daisy Buchanan * Tom Buchanan * Jordan Baker * Myrtle Wilson * George Wilson * As a team, create a profile for that character as if he /she is a member of a modern day social networking site, such as Facebook or MySpace. Your team's final presentation should be a PowerPoint presentation of 5-7 slides. Include at least three visuals and at least four of the following items: * A quotation that expresses the character's philosophy of life * A brief description of the character's family or friends. * A brief description of the time in which the character lives. * A brief description of the world in which the character lives. * A brief description of the character's conflicts or struggles. * Something interesting about the character. As the week begins, join your team and do the following: * Each team should select a leader. * Each team member should participate fully. Points will be based on both the amount of material posted and the quality of the work posted. * Remember that short comments, such as â€Å"I will go along with what everyone wants to do,† may earn no points. Offer significant material that advances the project. * Instead of listing websites, offer the information from that site along with the reference. Do not just offer material that was cut-and-pasted from websites; instead, write the information in your own words, and cite your sources. Note about visuals: Your team  can create your own visuals, use clip art, or use items from the Internet. If you use Internet images in your presentation, cite the sources on your final slide. Post your team's final presentation in Doc Sharing. At the en d of the week, you may download the other team projects posted in Doc sharing and enjoy viewing them.Daisy is the center of the story, and the character who originates the vast majority of events within the book. The life and fortune of Gatsby are built on the hope that someday he may revive his love with Daisy. Daisy has something that makes her special, and she is different from Jordan, and the rest of the women in the work, and this is seen through the narrations of Nick and Gatsby, and even in the way in which Tom defends her image in front of his lover. She is woman native of Louisville, Kentucky and through the stories told by Jordan, we know that she was the center of attention and the soul of the party, and is a beautiful woman who likes to have fun and flirt through cheeky and extremely frivolous conversations, and this is so inevitable that even her cousin is a victim of her gadgets, she did it at her first party at Gatsby’s house: â€Å"These things excite me so,â € she whispered. â€Å"If you want to kiss me any time during the evening, Nick, just let me know and I’ll be glad to arrange it for you. Just mention my name.Or present a green card. I’m giving out green†. Nick describes the voice of Daisy as beautiful, mysterious, flirtatious, intriguing, exciting, sensual, and famous, and Gatsby includes that it is full of money; on several occasions, the characters comment that it is a magical instrument used by her, which is full of promises and beautiful things on the distance, and Daisy uses her seductive voice to drag people towards her, especially to Gatsby since the voice of Daisy speaks of everything he want of it, wealth, social status, true happiness and he cannot refuse to this attraction.Besides her seductive and alluring voice, she is a dreamy woman and she sees her past with melancholy and idealizes her first love affair, presenting her present as boring and stuffy and she struggles daily with the pressures of society which forced her to marry an aggressive, overbearing and arrogant man who woke her up from her childhood dreams and made her realize that very often dreams don't become reality, although in her deep insight, she keeps the hope that hers can become a reality. But Daisy's biggest problem is that he is not a mythical goddess, but she is an ordinary person with strengths and weaknesses, and she is used to live her life in a certain way, following the rules and by this obedience, she hopes some rewards. When Gatsby comes back to her life, moving its foundations and challenging her to leave behind these ties and conventionalisms, she frightens, and decides to return to her safe harbor, which is Tom, and prefers to be unhappy that to have to sacrifice her live to escape with Gatsby, and leave everything behind. She is selfish and only thinks about her, unlike Gatsby who made his life according to his unconditional love towards her. The Great Gatsby Jay Gatsby, born James Gatz, the son of poor farmers, â€Å"sprang from his platonic conception of himself† (Fitzgerald 98). Thanks to a job on millionaire Dan Cody’s yacht, Jay was inspired to change his way of life. Despite his mysterious past, including rumours that he killed a man, Gatsby was in every way a tragic hero. After meeting a beautiful girl named Daisy in Louisville, Gatsby spent his whole life fighting to be with her. He was too poor to ever be seen with her, so he got in deep with some gangsters just trying to earn enough money to be with her. When he finally had enough cash, he found out that she was married. The instance comes up where he had to lie for her, and she wasn’t even grateful. After trying so hard for all those years to impress her, she ended up being the death of him – literally. Trying to recapture the past, nothing ends up going right for Gatsby, and he dies because of it. That, in it of itself, is the definition of a tragic hero. Daisy Fay was everything a guy could dream of – fun, slender, and extremely beautiful. If you had the best summer romance of your life with an amazing person, only to have them tell you that you were too poor to be with them, what would you do? Would you give up, or would you fight for them? Jay Gatsby chose the latter. After Daisy told him he wasn’t rich enough, he was devastated. Tragically, when he was finally rich enough to be with the girl of his dreams he found out she’d moved on. The only thing that Gatsby could do was admire her from afar, which is kind of creepy but apparently some girls find that romantic. â€Å"‘Gatsby bought that house so that he could be just across the bay. ’ Then it had not been merely the stars to which he had aspired on that June night. He came alive to me, delivered suddenly from the womb of his purposeless splendor. † (Fitzgerald 78). Gatsby was so in love with Daisy after all those years that he moved right across the bay from her. He was so obsessed with her that he didn’t stop to think about the consequences. Daisy was married, and pining after a married woman just screams ‘bad idea’. If her husband ever found out†¦ watch out Gatsby. He was so overwhelmed when he finally saw Daisy again, he thought it was unreal, surely thinking back to when they were initially together. He hadn’t once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes. Sometimes, too, he stared around at his possessions in a dazed way, as though in her actual and astounding presence none of it was any longer real. Once he nearly toppled down a flight of stairs. † (Fitzgerald 91) Gatsby spent a vast amount of h is life trying to be with Daisy, and now that she was actually in his house the whole situation felt surreal. Being so dedicated to the smallest things, like her presence in his house, was bad judgement. At that point Daisy could have manipulated him into doing whatever she wanted. Getting so involved with a woman in general is usually a bad idea, especially a married one. Going back to when Daisy told Gatsby he didn’t have enough money to be with her, Gatsby must have been desperate. At that point he probably would have done anything to get Daisy back, including getting involved with some very bad people. †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he’s a gambler. ’ Gatsby hesitated, then added coolly, ‘He’s the man who fixed the World’s Series back in 1919. † (Fitzgerald 73) Meyer Wolfsheim was a very bad person with molars for cuff links, and young Gatsby must have thought that getting involved with his ‘business’ would help him earn enough money to be good enough for Daisy. You would think that someone with teeth for accessories would be a person to generally avoid. Wolfsheim helped Gatsby get the money he needed by selling alco hol during the time of prohibition and selling him some drug-stores. Earning all that money in such an awful way must have been a story Gatsby didn’t share very often. ’It took me just three years to earn the money that bought it. ’ ‘I thought you inherited your money. ’ ‘I did old sport,’ he said automatically. ‘But I lost most of it in the big panic. The panic of war. ’ I think he hardly knew what he was saying for when I asked him what business he was in he answered, ‘That’s my affair,’ before he realized that wasn’t the appropriate reply. ‘Oh, I’ve been in several things,’ he corrected himself. ‘I was in the drug business and then I Was in the oil business. But I’m not in either one now. † (Fitzgerald 90) Gatsby was so used to lying about how he actually received all his money that when Nick, one of his closest friends, asked him he immediately lied. Having the instinct to lie, especially to his friends, was only going to c ome back and bite him in the butt, especially since he was involved with gangsters in the first place. ‘When witnesses concoct lies, they often miss the obvious. ’ – John Grisham. This quote is applicable to Gatsby because agreeing to lie for Daisy, he missed Nick’s warnings for him to get away due to Wilson’s inevitable repercussions. If a girl is cheating on her husband, she probably isn’t very trustworthy in the first place, so Gatsby agreeing to lie for Daisy and say he killed Myrtle was probably a bad idea. †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Yes,’ he said after a moment, ‘but of course I’ll say I was. ’†(Fitzgerald 143) Agreeing to lie was the first step towards his demise. Daisy couldn’t risk Gatsby accidentally letting it slip that she was the one driving, and she had to tell Tom something†¦ after everything that went on between the three of them, Tom and Daisy realized that they were still in love with each other and they just wanted everything to go back to normal. ‘What if I did tell him? That fellow had it coming to him. He threw dust into your eyes just like he did in Daisy’s, but he was a tough one. He ran over Myrtle like you’d run over a dog and never even stopped his car. ’† (Fitzgerald 178). Daisy turned on Gatsby just as quick as he had agreed to lie for her; she told Tom that Gatsby had agreed to lie for her and that they needed to get rid of him in case he told. Tom told Wilson that it was Gatsby and Wilson was so enraged that he shot Gatsby and then killed himself. Lying for Daisy only led to more trouble for Gatsby. The rash decision to lie ended his life as soon as he agreed to it. A tragic hero is a person who, through his or her own actions, leads to their own demise. Gatsby, through yearning for a girl he could never really have, working with convicts to get his money, and lying for aforementioned girl who only cared about herself unambiguously lead to his own murder, making him fit the description of a tragic hero to a tee. Gatsby did everything for a girl who turned on him like it was nothing. Was it worth it? Would you have done the same? Gatsby did everything for a girl who turned on him like it was nothing. Was it worth it? Would you have done the same? The Great Gatsby Every man wants to be considered great in the eyes of his peers, but it is important to remember what greatness truly means. There are thousands of ways to define the word â€Å"great,† but I have my own definition of the word. A great man is selfless, honest, and trustworthy. He is sincere, has strong values, and he does things for the benefit of others. Jay Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s main character in the novel The Great Gatsby, is a charismatic man who throws elaborate parties for the wealthy people of Long Island. To those around him, Gatsby appears to be a great man, however, the reader can see through this facade and understands that he is not as great as he appears. Because he is stubbornly narrow-minded, selfishly uses people for his benefit, and seeks to destroy a family, Jay Gatsby is not a great man by any means. Jay Gatsby is stubbornly narrow-minded, and refuses to accept the reality that he cannot be with Daisy Buchanan. Jay Gatsby is unable to let go of the few moments he shared with Daisy years ago, before he was shipped off to Europe to fight in the Great War. While he is away, Daisy marries Tom Buchanan, yet Gatsby still tries to win her hand. Instead of moving away from Daisy and starting a new life, Gatsby moves across the bay from her and insists he will meet her again. At one of Gatsby’s parties, Nick urges Gatsby not to ask too much from Daisy. Nick realizes that Daisy has moved on with her life and reminds Gatsby that he cannot repeat the past. Gatsby replies in shock saying â€Å"Can’t repeat the past? †¦Why of course you can† (110)! Gatsby, who has everything luxury imaginable, refuses to believe that he cannot relive his past with Daisy. A great man would get around such an obstacle in life, and would find another way to fulfill his heart’s desire. Because Gatsby put all of his â€Å"eggs in one basket,† he was left with nothing when his only love refused to be with him. Nick Carraway knew that Gatsby was narrow-minded and said that he â€Å"paid a high price for living too long with a single dream† (161). Unfortunately for Gatsby, that high price was his life. Jay Gatsby cannot be considered a great man because he selfishly uses people for his own benefit. Gatsby does not have any friends until Nick moves in next door; however this friendship is not genuine. Gatsby is simply using Nick in order to meet Daisy. Gatsby also uses Jordan to get closer to Daisy. Once he finds out that Jordan knows Daisy, he begins to make his clandestine arrangements. Acting as Gatsby’s pawn, Jordan relays a message to Nick saying, â€Å"He wants to know†¦if you’ll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over† (78). Gatsby is quick to ask for favors from Nick, even though he barely knows him. Gatsby pretends to be Nick’s friend; however, friendship works both ways and Gatsby never delivers on his end. Gatsby’s selfish use of people who care about him prevents him from being great. A great man does things for the benefit of others, expecting nothing in return. If Gatsby were a great man, he would not use innocent people as part of his plan to destroy a family. Gatsby actively tries to break up a marriage and family by trying to take Daisy away from her husband and daughter. Gatsby is not content with his current relationship because Daisy is still married to Tom, and he does not have her to himself. Gatsby takes drastic measures in an attempt to win back Daisy, which includes confronting her husband, Tom Buchanan. Gatsby becomes so bold as to tell Tom that Daisy never loved him. When arguing with Tom, Gatsby says, â€Å"Daisy, that’s all over now†¦it doesn’t matter any more. Just tell him the truth- that you never loved him- and it’s all wiped out forever† (132). Gatsby is only concerned with himself and does not consider how he would tear apart a family if Daisy were to run away with him. Marriage is a sacred union, in which individuals commit themselves to one another for the remainder of their lives. Gatsby gives no consideration to Daisy’s young daughter who would have to live the rest of her life without her mother. Gatsby’s inconsiderate actions make it clear that he is not great. A great man would never do anything to harm a family because a great man has values. If Gatsby was a great man, he would accept that Daisy married Tom, and look for love elsewhere. Jay Gatsby is not a great man because he uses people for his own benefit, very stubborn, and attempts to break up a marriage. Great men look to help better the lives of others around them. Everything that Gatsby does is selfish and nobody else besides him benefits from his actions. Gatsby uses his wealth to make it appear to others that he is a great man, however the reader knows that even the parties that Gatsby throws are for his own benefit. Gatsby cannot be considered a great man because of his selfishness and indifference to the feelings of others. Bilingaul Education essays

Bilingaul Education essays Many American students have the misconception that bilingual education is just another blow-off or easy-A class; yet more world languages are spoken in the United States today than ever before (Crawford, par. 1). What many blind teenagers and some adults fail to realize is that bilingualism has the potential to be either a crutch or a helping hand for their future. Bilingual education opens the doors of communication throughout the world, which in turn not only expands opportunities, but it aids in the understanding of different cultures, and grants easier access for exploration. First, bilingual comes from the Latin word bi, meaning two, and lingua, meaning tongue (McArthur 126). A bilingual is a person who can speak two languages (Oxford 189). Although the meaning of this term is common, it is easy to disregard the value of it. Communication is the key to any relationship; whether between friends, a teacher and his/her classroom, or countries, it is imperative. Therefore, the purpose of classes such as Spanish, French, and German, are to provide knowledge base for the learner to gain another way of communicating to people outside of his native tongue. It is impossible to conceive that the United States would ever seclude themselves from the rest of the world because our Nation and other countries are dependent upon each other for different resources, such as oil and other textiles. Because of this, it will soon be crucial to have a second language. America is the Great Melting Pot, where citizens of surrounding countries are migrating to (Blanco 454). Daily, one can find a diverse group of different languages spoken at local fast-food restaurants. Bilingualism is at least as common as monolingualism; about half the worlds population (some 2.5bn people) is bilingual (McArthur 127). Not only is it bene...

How to turn your hobby into a successful business

How to turn your hobby into a successful business The world of work has undergone a fundamental change in the past few decades. No longer can an employee expect to remain with the same company for a career, enjoy all kinds of excellent benefits, and retire with a nice pension. These days a worker should instead figure he or she will change jobs several (maybe several dozen) times over their working life. This decline in employment stability leads many to ponder how to turn a hobby into a profitable home-based business. The good news is, thanks to the internet and related technology, the time has never been better. Here are some considerations during the transition.Differences between a hobby and a businessTo turn your hobby into a business requires more than waking up one morning and declaring, â€Å"My widget collecting hobby is now my livelihood.† While you can certainly do that, and maybe it will work out, to take full advantage of being a business (like the ability to deduct business-related expenses from your taxes), you need to be able to prove to the IRS that you are, in fact, attempting to turn a profit.A hobby doesn’t allow for these kinds of deductions. In fact, if you show an operating loss for too many years, you lose the presumption that you’re running a profit-seeking business and may have to prove that fact to the IRS.How do you show that a hobby is now a business? The best bet is to procure the things associated with a business: a separate checking account and phone line, business cards, and appropriate licenses are a good start. A well-conceived and written business plan helps also. The following are the steps for creating a business out of a hobby.Have a plan, strategy, and define goalsThe first thing to consider is the different ways to extract money from your hobby. This is the time to sit down and do some serious thinking.Who are your competitors and what do they offer? What can you do that delivers value and targets an unfilled niche in the market? You need to figure out ho w to either do something different or do it better. During this strategy brainstorming phase, other factors to consider are finances and what goals (short and long-term) to set. When it comes to establishing these goals, try a SMART approach and make them Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.Pick a name and placeWithout a great name, you’re dead in the water. Not only does it need to be dynamic, explanatory, and easy to remember, do your due diligence to make sure it isn’t already in use. Most state government websites have a searchable online business name database.Once you settle on the perfect name, your next stop should be the U.S. Copyright Office’s website to trademark it. A name worth having is worth protecting from competitor encroachment.Where in your house will you conduct business activities? You should set aside a room or space solely dedicated to this. Perhaps the best part about starting a home-based business is how cheaply and q uickly you can get up and running. For those with limited finances, saving the expenses of a storefront are the only thing that makes turning a hobby into a business feasible at all.Formalize your hobby as a businessSome formalities of transitioning from a hobby into a business have already been mentioned. Here are a few others. One of the first decisions you face is which type of business entity to choose. While many people select to start as a sole proprietor, you might decide that forming a partnership or incorporating as a C-Corp, S-Corp, or LLC better suits your situation. If you have questions, consulting a legal or tax professional is a great idea. This step, along with obtaining a Federal Tax ID Number, opening a business checking account and securing the necessary licenses (usually city and county) and permits allow you to demonstrate to the IRS your sincere intention of turning a profit.Leverage the power of networking and build an online presenceEven if your new business is a local landscaping service, you need an online presence that includes a website and at least one social media account. There’s no escaping the fact that, even for local businesses, the internet is where people go in today’s world to find information about products and services. This is how you establish a public face to show to the world, build a customer base, and create a recognizable brand. Don’t overlook the power of networking as you go through this process. The old saying that it’s not what you know but who you know that makes the difference hasn’t changed.Put yourself out there. You never know what you’ll get in return that might help your business.Treat it like any other jobPerhaps the most significant difference between a hobby and a job is that the latter requires constant focus and dedication in order to provide a meaningful income. Presuming you like to afford regular meals and pay for that roof over your head, this needs to be a serious effort.Don’t just treat it like a job. It is your livelihood.Which means you don’t just show up, put in your time, and not think about it again until the next day. As an entrepreneur, it behooves you to put in the time in the evening if necessary to study the market in order to create new products and services that will turn a new business into a profitable and long-lasting business. What better choice in life could a person make than to turn something you love to do into a way to generate a full-time income? That’s what the preceding steps are designed to help you do.Follow each in turn, and you could be living the dream sooner than you think. Good luck!Lisa Michaels is a freelance writer, editor and a striving content marketing consultant from Portland. Arizona Real Estate Market Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Arizona Real Estate Market - Research Paper Example The crash was caused by several factors which had not been foreseen. This paper discusses Arizona’s real estate market crash. The economy of Arizona largely depended on the real estate market. The real estate market was at its peak when gradually the market collapsed. This did not happen abruptly, a number of factors can be identified as the cause of Arizona’s real estate market crash. One of the factors is that many people had taken mortgage to purchase homes. People were tempted to own homes either for personal use or to sell later. Some of them could not afford and decided that a mortgage would help them become home owners. In addition, obtaining loans was easy going. The loans were characterized by low interest at the initial years. Later, the loan interest would be adjusted according to fluctuation. Some of the people with loans whose income could not match with the loan repayment premiums discovered that the mortgage was a challenge when it came to paying. There w ere many houses available for selling. The economy was strained and people were not willing to purchase when the economy was not thriving. There was little selling activity when compared with the prevailing trends and previous years. The financial sector had been giving mortgage with security. The large institutions could be given larger mortgages backed with security so that they could enable employees purchase the homes. The real estate markets in Arizona represented their value using the property worth in mortgage. Consequently, the lenders had successfully invested in many buying homes. As a result, a lot of property ended up as fore closures. With the increase in fore closure, the securities were not worthy. The arrangement to offer many people homes instead become unsuccessful and led to more challenges. Crook (23) mentions that, mortgages enable people to own home.
